Kyrgyz is a Turkic language spoken by roughly four million people, primarily in Kyrgyzstan, and also by Kyrgyz communities in China, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Russia. It belongs to the Kyrgyz–Kipchak subgroup of the Kipchak languages, and due to modern language convergence it shares a growing degree of mutual intelligibility with Kazakh.
Kyrgyz has used several writing systems over time. Early forms were written in Turkic runes, later shifting to an Arabic-based script (used in the USSR until 1928 and still used by some communities in China). From 1928 to 1940, a Latin-based Uniform Turkic Alphabet was used. In 1940, a Cyrillic alphabet became the standard and remains dominant today. Since Kyrgyzstan’s independence in 1991, there have been discussions about a possible shift to a Latin-based script (closer to Turkish), but this has not been implemented.
